The detached longhouse utilizes a long slender form to create a greater separation of spaces within an efficient footprint, thus maintaining the most amount of backyard square footage. The exposed timber structure, sourced locally or upcycled, adds depth and flexibility. A built-in covered porch provides a semiprivate outdoor space, and an optional sliding screen door could be implemented to extend the main dining and living spaces outdoors during desirable seasons. Windows placed above eye level along the southeastern facade allow even daylighting while maintaining privacy between the ADU and the main backyard. The Longhouse can either utilize a slab on grade foundation or be easily lifted on to piers.
